Sensor Faults and Replacement in Tyne and Wear
A sensor fault code points at a circuit, not always at the sensor. We test before replacing anything.

Your car relies on a network of sensors that report what the engine, wheels and exhaust are doing. When one gives a wrong or missing reading, the car may run badly, set a warning light or refuse to behave normally.
The tempting fix is to buy the sensor named in a fault code. That works sometimes, but not always, and we prefer to check first.
What sensors do and how they fail
Sensors turn something physical, such as speed, temperature, position or airflow, into an electrical signal. They sit in hot, dirty, vibrating places, so they wear, get contaminated or lose their connection.
- Crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, linked to starting and running
- Oxygen sensors in the exhaust, affecting running and emissions
- Airflow and pressure sensors feeding the engine management
- Coolant and air temperature sensors
- Wheel speed sensors linked to ABS and traction control
Why we test before replacing
A code such as a sensor circuit fault can come from the sensor, its wiring, its connector or the module reading it. We read the live data, check the signal against what it should be, and inspect the wiring and plug.
At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn this avoids fitting a new part that fixes nothing. When the sensor itself proves faulty, we replace it and then check the readings return to normal.
What affects the job
Position matters most. A sensor on top of the engine is easy to reach, while one in the exhaust, on the gearbox or behind a seized fitting takes longer. Part cost varies widely between makes, and some sensors need a procedure after fitting so the car recognises them.
Sometimes fault codes are cleared and the problem returns, which tells us the underlying cause is still there. We explain our findings and recommendations at the estimate.
Warning signs not to ignore
Poor running, rough idle, a flashing engine light or reduced power should be checked soon. If an ABS or other safety warning is lit, braking and stability systems may not work as designed, so have it looked at promptly.
If the car is running very roughly or the engine warning light is flashing, avoid hard driving and get advice.
In short: Replace the sensor only when it is the problem. We test the signal, wiring and connector first, then fit a new one if it is truly at fault.
Sensor Faults and Replacement: FAQs
Can I just clear the warning light?
Clearing it removes the message but not the cause. If the fault is real the light usually returns. It is better to find out what set it.
How do you know a sensor has failed?
We compare its live signal with expected behaviour, test its circuit and inspect its plug and wiring. Where possible we confirm the fault before recommending a replacement.
Will a bad sensor damage the engine?
It can lead to poor running or extra strain depending on which sensor and for how long. We cannot predict damage in advance, which is another reason not to leave warnings alone.
Is an ABS sensor fault a safety issue?
It can be. The ABS and stability systems may be switched off when a wheel speed sensor fails. The normal brakes usually still work, but it is sensible to have it checked soon.
Do all sensors need coding after fitting?
No, many simply plug in. Some do need adapting or resetting with diagnostic equipment. We check what your car requires.
