Clutch Repairs & Replacement from our Hebburn workshop

A clutch does not usually fail without warning. A high biting point, slipping under acceleration, difficulty selecting gears or a pedal that feels odd are all clues. Finding the cause early often means a simpler repair.

Banks of the Tyne Motor Co carries out clutch repairs, clutch replacement and flywheel replacement from our Hebburn workshop, serving drivers across Tyne and Wear. Because we also repair gearboxes and engines, we can look at the surrounding parts while the gearbox is out.

What we cover

Specific services

Clutch repairs

Clutch repairs include fixing hydraulic faults, replacing a slave or master cylinder, a release bearing or a cable, rather than automatically replacing the whole clutch. We diagnose first so you only pay for what the car needs.

Clutch replacement

Clutch plate, pressure plate and flywheel laid out on a bench

Clutch replacement means removing the gearbox, fitting a new clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing, and checking the flywheel. We set everything up correctly so the clutch bites smoothly and lasts.

Flywheel replacement

Flywheel replacement is often done alongside the clutch, especially on cars with dual-mass flywheels. A worn flywheel can cause judder, noise and early clutch wear, so it is inspected whenever the clutch is replaced.

Why choose us for clutch repairs & replacement

Right diagnosis

The problem is not always the clutch plate: hydraulics, release bearings and flywheels can be the cause.

Parts that belong together

We recommend replacing related parts at the same time when it makes sense, so you do not pay for the same labour twice.

Gearbox specialists nearby

Gearbox and clutch faults are linked, so we can look at both.

How it works

  1. Describe the symptoms

Slipping, judder, a high biting point or a heavy pedal are all useful clues.

  2. Diagnose

We test the clutch and its hydraulics to find out whether replacement or a smaller repair is needed.

  3. Replace and refit

The gearbox is removed, parts are replaced as agreed and everything is refitted and set up.

  4. Road test

We road test the car to check the clutch action and gear changes.

Clutch Repairs & Replacement FAQs

How do I know my clutch is failing?

Slipping when you accelerate, a high biting point, difficulty getting into gear, juddering or a burning smell can all mean the clutch is wearing out.

Do I need a new flywheel with the clutch?

Not always, but the flywheel is checked whenever the clutch is replaced. Dual-mass flywheels are often replaced with the clutch to avoid repeating the labour.

My clutch pedal feels spongy. Is it the clutch?

Not necessarily. A spongy pedal can point to hydraulic issues such as air in the system or a failing master or slave cylinder.

How long does a clutch last?

There is no fixed figure. Driving style, traffic, towing and hill starts all affect it, and a well-used clutch can last a long time.

Can I keep driving with a slipping clutch?

It will usually get worse, and a slipping clutch can leave you stranded. Have it checked sooner rather than later.

What does a clutch replacement involve?

The gearbox is removed so the clutch assembly can be replaced. Related parts such as the release bearing are renewed, and the flywheel is inspected.

Can you diagnose a clutch fault before replacing it?

Yes. We check the pedal, hydraulics, release mechanism and driving symptoms so we replace the right part.

Do you work on automatic and semi-automatic gearboxes?

We look at transmission faults as part of our gearbox services. Tell us the make and model and we will explain what is possible.
