Exhausts & Emissions from our Hebburn workshop

A noisy exhaust, a warning light on the dash or a failed emissions test all point to the same place: the exhaust and emissions system. These parts clean up what your engine produces, and when they fail they can affect performance, running costs and your MOT.

Banks of the Tyne Motor Co offers exhaust repairs, exhaust replacement, catalytic converters, DPF diagnostics, DPF cleaning and repairs and emissions diagnostics from our Hebburn workshop, serving drivers across Tyne and Wear. We start with diagnosis so the right fix is applied.

What we cover

Specific services

Exhaust repairs

Exhaust repairs fix leaks, loose mounts and damaged sections without replacing the whole system. A blowing exhaust is noisy, can let fumes into the cabin and can fail an MOT.

Exhaust replacement

Exhaust replacement is needed when corrosion or damage means repair is no longer sensible. We fit the section or complete system suitable for your vehicle and check for leaks and rattles afterwards.

Catalytic converters

Catalytic converters clean exhaust gases and can fail through age, contamination or damage. Symptoms include loss of power, rattles and warning lights. We diagnose why it failed before replacing it.

DPF diagnostics

DPF diagnostics investigate diesel particulate filter warnings, loss of power and failed regenerations. Blockage is common on cars used for short journeys, but sensors and fuel or engine faults can also be the cause.

DPF cleaning and repairs

DPF cleaning and repairs aim to restore a blocked filter where possible and fix the underlying issue. Replacement is not always necessary, and we explain the options after diagnosing the filter.

Emissions diagnostics

Emissions diagnostics find out why a vehicle fails an emissions test or shows an emissions-related warning. We read fault codes, test sensors and check the engine and exhaust to find the underlying cause.

Why choose us for exhausts & emissions

Diagnosis first

Emissions problems have many causes, so we test before replacing expensive parts.

MOT-aware

Exhaust and emissions faults are common MOT failures, and we can repair and retest.

Engine and electrics nearby

Because a fault in the engine or sensors can affect emissions, we can look into the cause rather than only the symptom.

Exhausts & Emissions FAQs

How do I know if my exhaust has a leak?

A louder or rattling exhaust, a hissing or ticking noise, a smell of fumes or an exhaust hanging low are common signs.

Why has my DPF warning light come on?

It usually means the diesel particulate filter is clogged and not regenerating properly. Short journeys are a typical cause. Diagnosis shows what is needed.

Can a DPF be cleaned instead of replaced?

Sometimes. It depends on the type and condition. We diagnose the filter and explain whether cleaning or replacement makes sense.

What does a catalytic converter do?

It converts harmful exhaust gases into less harmful ones. If it fails, you may lose power, fail an emissions test or see a warning light.

Why did my car fail its MOT emissions test?

Causes include faulty sensors, engine management issues, a failing catalyst or a blocked DPF. Diagnosis finds the actual cause.

Is it safe to drive with an exhaust leak?

Not ideally. Leaks can let harmful fumes into the cabin, and parts can drop off. Have it checked soon.

Why do short journeys damage diesel filters?

On short trips the exhaust does not get hot enough to burn off soot in the filter, so it builds up. An occasional longer run can help.

Can you carry out emissions repairs and retest the MOT?

Yes. We repair the fault and, as we offer MOT testing, can retest the vehicle.
