Engine Repairs & Rebuilds from our Hebburn workshop

An engine problem rarely fixes itself, and the sooner it is looked at the more options you tend to have. A small oil leak, a rise in the temperature gauge or an unusual noise can all be early warnings. Our job is to find out what is really wrong before recommending anything.

At Banks of the Tyne Motor Co in Hebburn we handle engine diagnostics, servicing and repairs, engine rebuilds, engine replacement and fitting, cylinder-head repairs, head-gasket replacement, timing belts and chains, water pumps, oil leaks, cooling systems, radiators, injectors, fuel-system repairs and turbo repairs and replacement for drivers across Tyne and Wear.

What we cover

Specific services

Engine diagnostics

Engine diagnostics combine fault-code reading with hands-on testing. A code tells you where to look, not what has failed, so we follow it with checks on sensors, compression, fuel delivery and more until the cause is clear.

Engine servicing

Fresh engine oil being poured into an engine

Engine servicing keeps the engine healthy with fresh oil and filters, plus checks of belts, hoses, coolant and fluid levels. Regular servicing is the cheapest way to avoid the larger engine jobs that come from neglect.

Engine repairs

Engine repairs cover everything from failed sensors and leaking seals to mechanical faults inside the engine. We diagnose, explain what is needed and carry out the repair, using the right parts for your vehicle.

Engine rebuilds

An engine rebuild strips the engine, inspects and measures components, replaces what is worn and reassembles it. It can be the right answer when the engine has failed but the rest of the car is worth keeping. We will explain whether a rebuild or replacement fits your situation.

Engine replacement and fitting

Engine replacement and fitting means swapping a failed engine for another unit. We can discuss the options, fit the replacement properly and check the car runs correctly, including the cooling, electrics and fluids around it.

Cylinder-head repairs

Cylinder-head repairs deal with problems such as cracks, warping, worn valves and failed seals. The head is inspected, machined or repaired as needed and refitted with new gaskets and fasteners.

Head-gasket replacement

Head-gasket replacement fixes a failed seal between the engine block and cylinder head. Signs include overheating, coolant loss, white smoke and milky oil. Acting quickly helps avoid further damage, and the head should be checked when the gasket is replaced.

Timing belts

Timing belts keep the engine's valves and pistons in step, and they need replacing at the intervals the manufacturer specifies. A snapped belt can wreck an engine, so replacement is preventive work worth doing on time, usually alongside the water pump.

Timing chains

Timing chains last longer than belts but can stretch, rattle or wear their tensioners and guides. Rattling on start-up is a typical early sign. We diagnose the problem and replace the chain, guides and tensioner as needed.

Water pumps

Water pumps circulate coolant, and a failing one can cause overheating. Leaks around the pump, whining noises or rising temperatures are warnings. On many engines the pump is replaced with the timing belt to avoid doing the same labour twice.

Oil leaks

Oil leaks come from gaskets, seals and joints that harden or wear with age. We trace where the oil is really coming from, because a leak from a high gasket can look like a low one, then replace the faulty part.

Cooling systems

Cooling system work covers coolant, hoses, thermostats, pumps and sensors, which together keep the engine at the right temperature. Overheating is serious, so if the gauge climbs, stop and get it checked rather than driving on.

Radiators

Radiator repairs and replacement tackle leaks, blockages and damaged cooling fins. A radiator that cannot shed heat will cause overheating, and we check the rest of the system when we replace one.

Injectors

Injector faults cause rough running, poor economy, smoke or hard starting. We test injectors, clean or replace them as appropriate and check the fuel system around them.

Fuel-system repairs

Fuel-system repairs cover pumps, filters, lines and delivery faults that cause stalling, hesitation or no-start problems. We test pressure and flow to track down where the problem is.

Turbo repairs

Turbo repairs address turbochargers that whistle, smoke, lose boost or fail. Oil starvation and worn bearings are common causes, so we look at why the turbo failed before replacing parts.

Turbo replacement and fitting

Turbo replacement and fitting is needed when the turbocharger is beyond repair. We fit the replacement, renew oil feed and related parts where required and check boost and running afterwards.

Why choose us for engine repairs & rebuilds

Diagnosis first

We find the cause before suggesting a repair, so you are not paying for guesswork.

Repair, rebuild or replace

We explain the options when an engine needs major work and help you decide what makes sense for your car.

Everything under one roof

Gearbox, clutch, cooling, electrics and MOT work are all handled in the same workshop.

How it works

  1. Describe the problem

Tell us the symptoms: noises, smoke, warning lights, leaks, overheating or loss of power.

  2. Diagnose

We test and inspect to find the real cause, then explain the options and give you a free quote.

  3. Repair, rebuild or replace

The agreed work is carried out with suitable parts, and related components are checked.

  4. Test and handover

We check the engine running, fluids and warning lights and explain what was done.

Engine Repairs & Rebuilds FAQs

What is the difference between an engine rebuild and a replacement engine?

A rebuild strips and repairs your own engine with new components where needed. A replacement swaps it for another unit. The better option depends on the engine, the car and the condition of the rest of the vehicle.

What are the signs of a failing head gasket?

Overheating, coolant loss with no visible leak, white exhaust smoke, milky oil and bubbling in the coolant tank are all typical signs. Stop driving if the engine overheats and get it checked.

Do I need to replace the timing belt?

Timing belts have manufacturer-set replacement intervals based on mileage and age. If you are unsure of the service history, ask us to check it. A failed belt can seriously damage the engine.

My engine is leaking oil. How serious is it?

It depends on where it is leaking and how fast. Small seepage can be monitored, but heavy leaks risk low oil levels and damage. We trace the source and repair it.

Why is my engine overheating?

Common causes are low coolant, a failed thermostat, a leaking radiator or hose, a faulty water pump or a head gasket problem. Stop safely and have it diagnosed before driving further.

Can you repair or replace a turbo?

Yes. We carry out turbo repairs and replacement and look at why the turbo failed, such as oil supply problems, so the new one does not fail too.

Will you tell me what is wrong before starting work?

Yes. We diagnose first, explain what we have found and agree the work with you before carrying it out.

Can you fit an engine I have sourced?

Talk to us about it. We will tell you what we can fit, and what condition checks the engine and related parts may need first.
