Engine Diagnostics in Tyne and Wear

A warning light or rough-running engine needs a cause found, not a guess: diagnostics is how we separate the two.

Engine diagnostics is the process of working out why an engine is misbehaving. It might be a warning light, a misfire, a loss of power, hard starting, poor fuel economy or smoke. The aim is to find the actual fault before any parts are bought.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we use diagnostic equipment alongside practical checks, because a fault code points to a system, not always to a failed part. We serve Tyne and Wear and explain the result in plain terms.

When diagnostics is worth doing

Any time the engine management light comes on, or the car runs differently, there is something to investigate. A flashing warning light, severe loss of power, or an overheating gauge in the red means stop driving as soon as it is safe.

Typical reasons people bring a car in:

  • Warning light on the dashboard
  • Misfiring, juddering or uneven idle
  • Hesitation or loss of power
  • Hard starting or stalling
  • Unusual smoke, smells or poor economy

What the process involves

We connect equipment to read stored fault codes and live data from the engine's sensors. That is the starting point, not the answer. Codes are followed up with physical checks of wiring, connectors, vacuum and air leaks, ignition parts and fuel delivery.

Sometimes the fault is intermittent, so we may ask when it happens and what you were doing, and we may need to recreate the conditions.

What affects the outcome

A code such as a misfire on one cylinder can have several causes: ignition, injector, compression or an air leak. Testing in a sensible order avoids replacing parts that were fine.

How long diagnosis takes depends on how easily the fault shows itself and how accessible the components are. Cost reflects that time, and we explain it at the estimate.

Preparing for the appointment

Write down what you notice: when it happens, cold or warm, speed, load, and whether the light is steady or flashing. Mention recent work, fuel fills or anything that changed beforehand.

Afterwards, ask what was found, what evidence supports it, and which repairs are urgent versus those that can wait.

In short: Good diagnosis saves money by stopping guesswork. Know the cause first, then decide on the repair.

Engine Diagnostics: FAQs

Does a fault code tell you exactly what is broken?

Not usually. It tells us which system has detected a problem. We then test to find the actual cause.

Can I drive with the engine light on?

A steady light is a prompt to get it checked soon. A flashing light, or serious symptoms such as lost power, means stop driving and arrange help.

Will diagnostics fix the problem?

Diagnosis finds the cause. Any repair is explained and agreed separately, so you decide what goes ahead.

Why does the light come and go?

Some faults are intermittent. Stored codes can still help, though the fault may need more investigation.

Do you diagnose petrol and diesel engines?

We look at the engine fault in front of us whatever the fuel type. Tell us what the car is when you book.
