Engine Repairs & Rebuilds

Engine Rebuilds in Tyne and Wear

A rebuild strips your own engine down, replaces what is worn and puts it back together. It is not always the right answer, and we will say so.

An engine rebuild means taking the existing engine out of the car, stripping it completely and measuring every critical part. What is worn or damaged is machined, repaired or replaced, and the engine is reassembled with new seals, gaskets and bearings as required.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we offer engine rebuilds alongside engine repairs and engine replacement and fitting. This page explains when a rebuild is worth considering and what you should expect from the process.

When a rebuild is considered

Rebuilds usually follow serious failure or long-term wear, such as loss of oil pressure, bearing damage, a knocking or seized engine, or heavy oil consumption.

It may also suit a sound car you would rather keep with its original engine. Before anyone commits, we diagnose so we know the fault is internal.

  • Knocking or rumbling from deep inside the engine
  • Low or fluctuating oil pressure warnings
  • Heavy oil use or blue smoke
  • Metal particles found in the oil

What the process involves

The engine is removed and stripped. The block, crankshaft, pistons, bearings, cylinder head and valve gear are cleaned and measured against tolerances. Some machining may be done by a specialist engineering shop, as is common in the trade.

It is rebuilt with new bearings, seals and gaskets, often with timing parts and water pump too, then refitted and checked. Running-in advice matters afterwards, and we will give it.

What affects the outcome and the cost

Rebuilds are labour-intensive and the extent of damage is rarely known until the engine is apart. Cost depends on which parts are fitted new, the machining needed and how complex the engine is.

Because findings can change the plan, we explain in stages and agree with you before anything extra is done.

  • Extent of internal damage
  • Engine design and how much it costs to source parts
  • Machining work needed on block and head

Rebuild or replace?

Sometimes fitting a different engine is more sensible. We cover both rebuilds and engine replacement and fitting, so we can compare them honestly for your car.

If the car is worth less than the work, it is fair to step back and decide before spending. Ask us for a straight opinion.

In short: A rebuild is a serious job that suits the right engine and the right car. We will diagnose first, give you an honest comparison with replacement, and agree the plan with you at Banks of the Tyne.

Engine Rebuilds: FAQs

How do I know if I need a rebuild and not a smaller repair?

We diagnose first. Many noises and smoke problems have simpler causes such as a worn component, a leak or a head gasket fault, and a rebuild is only recommended when the evidence points to internal wear or damage.

Will I get the same engine back?

In a rebuild, yes, it is your engine, restored. This differs from replacement, where a different engine is fitted. We explain which route suits your car.

Can the price change during the job?

It can, because damage is not fully visible until the engine is stripped. We explain the likely range of work at the estimate and talk to you before doing anything beyond what was agreed.

Is machining done in-house?

Some specialist machining may be carried out by an engineering workshop. Ask us at the estimate how your engine's work would be handled.

How should I drive after a rebuild?

A rebuilt engine usually needs careful running-in, with gentle use and an early oil and filter check. We will give you advice specific to the engine when you collect it.
