DPF Cleaning and Repairs in Tyne and Wear

A blocked diesel particulate filter can bring a warning light, poor power and limp mode, but the cause matters as much as the cleaning.

A diesel particulate filter, or DPF, traps soot from a diesel engine's exhaust. It is meant to clear itself by burning that soot off at high temperature, a process called regeneration.

Regeneration needs the right conditions. Short, slow journeys often prevent it, and over time the filter clogs. At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we offer DPF diagnostics, cleaning and repairs for Tyne and Wear drivers.

Signs your DPF needs attention

The usual first sign is a dashboard warning, often a filter symbol or the engine management light. You may also notice the car feeling flat, the fans running after you switch off, or fuel use creeping up.

  • DPF or engine warning light
  • Reduced power or limp mode
  • Frequent regeneration with the engine running hot
  • Smoke from the exhaust
  • Oily smell or rising oil level

What the work involves

We start by reading the fault codes and checking live data, including pressure readings across the filter, to see whether it is truly blocked or a sensor is misleading the car. Then we decide between cleaning, a forced regeneration or replacement.

Cleaning is not always possible. If the filter is cracked, melted or heavily contaminated with ash or oil, cleaning may not restore it. We tell you what we find rather than guess.

Why it blocked in the first place

Repeated short trips are the common culprit, but not the only one. A faulty injector, a leaking turbo, a failed EGR valve or a bad sensor can all cause excess soot, and a clean filter will simply clog again if they are left alone.

Cost depends on the vehicle, the level of blockage, whether other parts are involved and whether cleaning or replacement is needed. We explain this at the estimate.

What not to do

Do not ignore the light and keep doing short journeys. Do not remove or hollow out a filter. Taking out a DPF can lead to an MOT failure and may break the law, so check the current rules before listening to anyone who suggests it.

If the car loses power or the warning is accompanied by overheating or smoke, stop somewhere safe and get it checked.

In short: A DPF problem is rarely just the filter. Find the cause, then clean or repair accordingly. Ask us at Banks of the Tyne what your car needs.

DPF Cleaning and Repairs: FAQs

Will a long motorway drive fix it?

Sometimes it helps if the filter is only mildly loaded and the car is healthy. If the light stays on or returns quickly, a proper diagnosis is needed.

Can every DPF be cleaned?

No. It depends on the condition of the filter. Inspection and testing tell us whether cleaning is worthwhile.

Is it legal to remove a DPF?

Removing one from a car that was fitted with it can cause an MOT failure and legal trouble. Check the current rules and do not rely on hearsay.

Why does my DPF keep clogging?

There is usually an underlying cause, such as your driving pattern or a fault elsewhere. We look for it as part of the job.

What should I tell you when I book?

Describe the warning lights, how you normally use the car and whether it has gone into limp mode. It helps us narrow things down fast.
