Alternators and Starter Motors in Tyne and Wear

The starter gets the engine going and the alternator keeps it charged, and they fail in very different ways.

The starter motor turns the engine over to get it running. The alternator then takes over, generating electricity to power the car and recharge the battery while you drive.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we test and replace alternators and starter motors for drivers in Tyne and Wear, and we confirm the fault first, because a flat battery can mimic either failure.

Signs of a failing alternator

An alternator problem often shows as a battery light, dim or flickering headlights, a whining noise, or electrical items behaving strangely. Eventually the battery runs down and the car will not start or stalls while driving.

  • Battery or charging warning light
  • Dim or pulsing lights
  • Whining or grinding from the front of the engine
  • Burning smell
  • Car stalls then will not restart

Signs of a failing starter

A starter fault usually means the engine will not crank properly while the lights and radio still work. You may hear a single click, a grinding noise, or nothing at all. It can also be intermittent, working fine for days and then failing.

Do not keep trying to start repeatedly. It can overheat the starter and flatten the battery.

How we work out which part has failed

We test the battery first, then check charging output and the starting circuit, including cables, earths and connections. A corroded terminal or loose earth can produce symptoms identical to a failed component.

If a part does need replacing, we remove the old one, fit the new one and recheck the system. A drive belt that drives the alternator is also inspected, as a worn belt can cause charging trouble.

Cost and the repair or replace question

Cost depends on the vehicle, how accessible the part is and what type of replacement is suitable, whether new or reconditioned. Access varies a great deal between cars, and that affects labour time. We explain it at the estimate.

Whether a unit can be repaired depends on inspection, and we will not promise it. Sometimes replacement is the sensible route.

In short: Charging and starting faults can look alike, so testing matters. Get it diagnosed first, then fixed. Talk to us at Banks of the Tyne.

Alternators and Starter Motors: FAQs

Can I tell the difference between a battery and alternator problem?

Not reliably. A battery that is flat because the alternator is not charging looks the same as a worn-out battery. Testing tells them apart.

Is it safe to drive with a failing alternator?

Only briefly. The car will run on battery power until it runs out, then lose electrical function and may stall. Get it checked promptly.

Why does my car click but not start?

Often low battery power or a poor connection, sometimes the starter. We check each before replacing anything.

Should I replace both together?

Not unless both are faulty. We test each and only recommend what is needed.

Could the belt be the problem?

Yes. A slipping or damaged belt can cause charging faults, so we check it as part of the job.
