Warning Light Diagnostics in Tyne and Wear

A dashboard light is a prompt to investigate, not a diagnosis, and some colours mean stop now.

Modern cars monitor dozens of systems and use dashboard lights to flag problems. The light tells you something is wrong, but rarely tells you what or how serious it is.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we carry out warning-light diagnostics for drivers in Tyne and Wear, connecting to the car's systems to find the actual fault.

Which lights mean stop

Colour is a rough guide. Red generally means a serious fault and you should stop safely and switch off. Amber or orange usually means a fault needs attention soon. Check your handbook for your own car, as symbols differ.

  • Red oil pressure or engine temperature: stop and switch off
  • Red brake warning: do not carry on driving
  • Red battery or charging light: expect power to fail
  • Amber engine management: get checked soon
  • Amber ABS, airbag or DPF lights: arrange diagnosis

How diagnosis works

We connect diagnostic equipment to read fault codes stored by the car, and look at live data from sensors. The code is a starting point. It points to a circuit or system, not always to a failed part.

A skilled check then follows: testing the sensor, wiring and connections, and confirming the cause before anything is replaced. Skipping that step is how people end up buying parts they did not need.

What affects the outcome

Intermittent faults are the hardest. A light that comes and goes may not show a clear fault at the time of the check, so tell us when it happens: cold starts, wet weather, hard acceleration or low speeds.

The cost depends on the time diagnosis takes, and then on the repair itself. A loose connector and a failed module are very different jobs. We explain it at the estimate, before work goes ahead.

Clearing a light is not fixing it

Switching a light off without finding the fault is not a repair. The light will usually return, and the problem underneath may be getting worse.

If the car feels unsafe, is overheating, or has lost braking or steering performance, do not wait for an appointment. Stop and arrange recovery.

In short: Do not ignore a light or just have it cleared. Get the fault properly found. Ask us at Banks of the Tyne.

Warning Light Diagnostics: FAQs

Can I just drive on with an amber light?

Often for a short time, but do not leave it. It may be a minor issue or an early warning of something costly. Get it checked.

Will the diagnosis tell me exactly what is wrong?

Usually it narrows it down, then testing confirms the fault. Some faults take more investigation than others.

Why did the light go off by itself?

Some faults are intermittent, and the car may clear the light after a number of trips. The code is often still stored, so a check can still help.

Do all makes work the same way?

The principle is the same, but information and software differ by manufacturer. Tell us the make, model and year when booking.

Can you fix what the diagnosis finds?

Where it falls within our auto electrical and engine work, we will explain the options. Some faults may need specialist parts or further inspection.
