Car Battery Replacement in Tyne and Wear

A flat battery is not always a dead battery, and a new one will not help if the charging system is at fault.

Your car battery supplies the power to start the engine and keeps electrical systems running when the engine is off. It wears out gradually, and cold, damp weather tends to expose a weak one.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we test and replace car batteries for drivers across Tyne and Wear, and check the wider charging system so the new battery gets a fair chance.

Signs your battery is weakening

The classic sign is slow, reluctant cranking when you turn the key or press the button. Dim lights, a clicking noise and electrical glitches can also point to a battery on its way out.

  • Slow or laboured starting
  • Clicking noise but no start
  • Dim headlights at idle
  • Battery warning light
  • Swollen casing or corrosion around the terminals

Why testing comes first

A car that will not start could have a tired battery, but also a faulty alternator, a starter fault, a poor connection or something draining power while parked. Replacing the battery without testing can leave the real problem untouched.

A proper test checks the battery's condition and the charging output, and looks for a parasitic drain if the battery keeps going flat.

What fitting involves and what affects cost

The old battery is disconnected and removed, the tray and terminals are cleaned, and a suitable replacement is secured and connected. Many modern cars need the new battery registered with the car's electronics, and some lose settings when disconnected. Ask us about this for your vehicle.

Cost depends on the battery type and rating your car needs, particularly if it has stop-start technology, and on how hard it is to reach. We explain it at the estimate.

Looking after the new battery

Short trips do not give a battery much chance to recharge. If most of your journeys are brief, an occasional longer drive helps. Switch off lights and accessories before turning the engine off.

If the car has been left unused for a long time, tell us. It may be worth checking whether the battery has been damaged by deep discharge.

In short: If your car is slow to start, get the battery and charging system tested before buying parts. Contact Banks of the Tyne to arrange it.

Car Battery Replacement: FAQs

How long do car batteries last?

It varies with the battery, the car, the climate and how you drive. Rather than guess, have it tested if you notice any symptoms.

Can I fit a battery myself?

On some older cars, yes. On many newer ones the car must be told a new battery has been fitted, and wrong fitting can upset electronics. Ask us if unsure.

Why did my new battery go flat?

Usually a charging fault or a drain on the electrical system. Testing finds it. We would rather find the cause than sell you another battery.

Do I need a special battery for stop-start?

Many stop-start cars need a particular type. Do not guess, check the requirements for your model.

Will I lose my radio and settings?

Possibly, depending on the car. Make a note of anything important, and ask us beforehand.
