Electrical Fault Finding in Tyne and Wear

We follow a symptom through the circuit until we find where the problem really starts, rather than swapping parts and hoping.

A modern car is full of circuits, and a fault in one of them can look like something else entirely. A window that stops, a radio that cuts out or a fuse that keeps blowing is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we treat electrical fault finding as a tracing job. We start with what you have noticed, work out which circuit is involved and test our way along it until the fault is isolated.

Faults that call for tracing

Some problems are obvious, such as a dead light. Others only show themselves in certain conditions, which is where proper tracing earns its keep. The list below covers what people most often bring to us.

  • A fuse that blows again straight after being replaced
  • Lights, wipers or windows that work some days and not others
  • Something staying live and draining the battery overnight
  • Dashboard messages or gauges behaving oddly
  • A component that is completely dead with no obvious reason

How the fault is narrowed down

We begin by checking the basics: battery condition, fuses, earths and the obvious connectors. Many faults sit there. If they do not, we move on to measuring voltage and resistance along the circuit to see where the signal disappears.

Where a control module is involved we read it with diagnostic equipment, but a stored code only points at an area. It does not name the broken part, so the testing still has to be done by hand.

What affects the outcome

Constant faults are generally quicker to trace than intermittent ones, because we can see them happening. A fault that only appears when the car is cold, wet or going over bumps may need us to recreate those conditions, which takes more time.

Access matters too. A cause hidden behind trim, under carpets or inside a sealed loom takes longer to reach. We explain the likely scale of work at the estimate, and we do not promise a repair is possible until the cause is found.

Helping us find it faster

Tell us exactly when the fault happens, how often, and whether it started after other work, a battery change or a wet spell. Mention any accessories added since you bought the car.

If you ever notice a burning smell, smoke or hot wiring, stop driving and get the car recovered rather than carrying on.

In short: A real electrical fault has a real cause, and testing the circuit is how we find it. Tell us what you notice and when, and we will take it from there.

Electrical Fault Finding: FAQs

Why does my fuse keep blowing?

A fuse blows when too much current flows, usually because of a short, a damaged wire or a failing component. Fitting a bigger fuse is not a safe answer, as it can let the wiring overheat. The circuit needs tracing to find what is drawing the current.

Can you find a fault that only happens occasionally?

Often yes, though it usually takes longer. We look for patterns in when it happens and try to reproduce it. Some faults will only show during a longer test, and we will be honest if we cannot yet confirm the cause.

Is this the same as full vehicle diagnostics?

Not quite. A diagnostic scan reads fault codes from the car's modules. Electrical fault finding goes further and physically tests the wiring, connectors and components behind a symptom.

Will you tell me the cost before starting work?

We explain what we expect to be involved at the estimate. Tracing time can vary if the fault proves awkward, so we talk to you before anything significant changes.

Should I keep driving with an electrical fault?

It depends on the fault. Lights, brake lights, wipers and anything affecting starting or charging matter for safety and reliability. Anything involving smoke or a burning smell means stop and call for recovery.
