Pre-MOT Inspections in Tyne and Wear

A pre-MOT inspection lets you find out what might fail while there is still time to deal with it calmly.

Going into an MOT unprepared can mean a failure, a repair bill at short notice and a retest. A pre-MOT inspection moves those surprises forward, to a point where you can choose how and when to deal with them.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we carry out pre-MOT inspections across Tyne and Wear. This is not the test itself and it carries no pass certificate. It is an honest look at the vehicle, using the test as our guide.

What we look at

We check the areas that most often cause failures, working through the vehicle much as a tester would. That means lights, tyres, brakes, steering and suspension, the exhaust and visible emissions, the windscreen, wipers and washers, mirrors, seatbelts, the horn and the body for sharp edges or corrosion.

Some items are things you can check yourself in a couple of minutes, such as bulbs and tyre condition. Others need the vehicle raised, which is where a workshop inspection adds real value.

  • Lights, indicators and number plates
  • Tyre condition and tread
  • Brakes and brake fluid level
  • Steering and suspension components
  • Exhaust condition and warning lights
  • Seatbelts, wipers, horn and mirrors

Why it can be worth doing

Many failures are simple, cheap-to-fix items found late. A blown bulb or a perished wiper blade should not turn into a retest. Larger items, such as worn suspension or brake parts, are better planned than discovered on test day.

It also helps if your current MOT is close to expiry. Check the date on your certificate and the current rules about how early you can test, rather than relying on an old rule of thumb.

What affects the outcome

An inspection reflects the vehicle on the day. A part that is close to the limit may pass today and fail in a few weeks, and a tester may judge a borderline item differently from us. So we describe findings as likely issues, not certainties.

Age, mileage, how the car is used and how recently it was serviced all play a part. A vehicle that has regular attention usually produces fewer surprises. Any repairs we recommend come with an estimate, and you decide what goes ahead.

What to expect and how to prepare

Bring the vehicle with its current paperwork if you have it, and tell us about any warning lights, noises or earlier failures. Clear out boot clutter and make sure the locking wheel nut key is with the car.

You will get a plain summary of what we found, split into what needs attention, what to watch and what looks fine. From there you can book repairs, have the MOT done, or take the list elsewhere if you prefer.

In short: Checking before the test is cheaper in stress than failing it. Bring the car in early and we will tell you what we see.

Pre-MOT Inspections: FAQs

Is a pre-MOT inspection the same as an MOT?

No. It is a check against what the test covers, but it does not produce an MOT certificate and it does not replace the official test.

Can it promise a pass?

No, we cannot promise that. It reduces the chance of surprises, but the test itself is an independent assessment on the day.

Can I do some checks myself first?

Yes, bulbs, tyres, wipers, washer fluid, number plates and the horn are easy to check. Deeper checks of brakes and suspension need a proper inspection.

What if you find problems?

We explain them in plain terms and give an estimate for any work. You choose what goes ahead, and nothing is done without your agreement.

When should I book it?

Ideally a little before your MOT is due, so there is room to repair anything found. Ask us how that fits with your current certificate date.
