MOT Repairs in Tyne and Wear

When an MOT result lists defects, the next step is working out what must be fixed, what can wait and how to go about it.

An MOT result can include failures, advisories or both. MOT repairs cover the work needed to put those items right. Reading the certificate carefully is the first step, because not every item on it carries the same urgency.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we go through the paperwork with you, inspect the car and agree a plan before any repair begins.

Reading your result

Defects are graded. Dangerous and major defects are failures, and a dangerous defect means the vehicle should not be driven until it is repaired. Minor defects and advisories are recorded but are not failures in themselves, though they are worth acting on before they worsen.

Bring the certificate or the reference. If the test was done elsewhere, the result is recorded online, and we can work from the list you give us.

  • Dangerous: do not drive
  • Major: a failure to be repaired
  • Minor: noted on the certificate
  • Advisory: monitor and plan

How repairs are approached

We inspect the faults named on the result to confirm the cause, because a symptom can have more than one source. A brake fault might be pads, discs, a seized caliper or a pipe, and the repair differs for each.

Parts choices, where there are any, are explained so you can decide with the facts in front of you.

What affects the outcome and cost

Cost is driven by parts, labour time and access, and by whether other worn components are found once the first fault is open. Rust and seized fasteners can make a simple job longer.

Not every repair is possible or sensible, and we can only say after inspection. If a repair is not economic or not practical, we tell you honestly.

Retesting after repair

Once the work is done, the car needs a retest to get a pass. The rules on retest timing and fees depend on where and when the retest is done, so check the current rules or ask us what applies to your case. Make sure repairs are completed before you drive on, particularly if the car was marked dangerous.

In short: MOT repairs start with understanding the result. Bring it in and we will explain what has to be done and what can wait.

MOT Repairs: FAQs

Do I have to repair everything listed?

Failures must be put right to pass. Advisories are not required for a pass but are worth watching, and we can advise on which matter most.

Can I drive away after a failure?

It depends on the result. If a dangerous defect was found, do not drive the car except as the rules allow. Otherwise check the current rules on the existing certificate and the risks.

Can you repair faults from a test done elsewhere?

Yes, bring the result and we will inspect and discuss what is needed.

How will I know the cost beforehand?

We give you an estimate after inspecting the faults, and we agree any extra work with you before doing it.

Will the car definitely pass afterwards?

We cannot promise a pass, because the retest is a formal check. We can make sure the failed items are properly dealt with.
