MOT Preparation in Tyne and Wear

Many MOT failures come from small things that could have been sorted beforehand. Preparation is about catching them first.

Preparing for an MOT means checking and putting right the items that most often cause failures before the test, so the result is not decided by a blown bulb or a worn wiper. It is not a way to make an unsafe car pass; it is a way to avoid being caught out by the simple stuff.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we can carry out preparation work ahead of testing, and below are the things you can check yourself first.

Checks you can do yourself

Walk around the car with the ignition on. Test every exterior light, brake lights and indicators included, which is easier with a helper. Look at the number plates for damage or dirt, and check the windscreen for chips and wiper blades for splits.

Then check tyres for visible damage and tread, the horn, seatbelts, and that the fluid levels are sensible. Warning lights that stay on, such as for the engine, airbags or ABS, are worth sorting out beforehand.

  • All exterior lights working
  • Wipers and washers working
  • Tyres in good condition
  • Horn and seatbelts working
  • No warning lights staying on

What we can do for you

If you would rather not do it yourself, we can inspect the car against the common failure points and tell you what needs attention. Where work is needed, we explain it and agree it with you.

Preparation may include replacing bulbs, wipers, or other small items, or investigating a warning light so the cause is known before the test.

What preparation cannot do

Preparation will not hide a serious fault, and nor should it. Corrosion, worn brakes, damaged steering or suspension and emissions problems need proper repair. We will be straight with you if something looks likely to fail, and if the car is unsafe, we will say not to drive it.

It is also worth knowing that the MOT is a snapshot on the day of the test. Standards and test items are updated over time, so check the current rules for details.

Timing and paperwork

Think about when your current MOT runs out and leave enough time to carry out any repairs. Driving without a valid MOT can be an offence except in limited circumstances, so check the current rules rather than leaving it to the last day. Have your registration and service history to hand.

In short: A bit of preparation avoids needless failures. Check the basics yourself or ask us to look the car over before test day.

MOT Preparation: FAQs

Is MOT preparation a separate service from the test?

It can be. Preparation is done before testing to find and fix likely problems, and the test itself is a separate formal check.

What are the most common avoidable failures?

Bulbs, tyres, wipers and washers, and warning lights are frequent causes. Many of these can be checked in minutes.

Will preparation make sure of a pass?

No one can promise that. It reduces the risk of failing for simple reasons, but the test is carried out on the day against the current standards.

Should I clean the car first?

A clean car with a tidy interior helps the tester access things, and there are rules about the condition and cleanliness needed for testing. A quick tidy is worthwhile.

What if you find a serious problem?

We explain what we found and what repair involves, and agree the next step with you. If it affects safety, we will tell you not to drive the car.
