Manual Gearbox Repairs in Tyne and Wear

A manual gearbox is built to last, but worn synchromesh, bearings and selectors will make themselves known through feel and noise.

A manual gearbox transfers power through sets of gears selected by a gearlever and linkage. Synchromesh rings help the gears match speed, bearings hold the shafts, and oil lubricates the lot.

Many problems start small. A slightly stiff gear or a faint whine is worth attention before it grows. This page covers how repair works and what to expect.

Symptoms to look out for

Because a manual box works with other parts, the fault is not always inside it. Linkage, mountings, fluid level and driveline parts can imitate gearbox trouble, so we check these first.

Jumping out of gear is a safety concern, since you lose drive unexpectedly. Avoid using the car until it is looked at.

  • Crunching going into a particular gear
  • Whining or humming that changes with speed or gear
  • Jumping out of gear
  • Stiff or notchy lever
  • Oil leaking from the casing
  • Difficulty finding reverse

What repair involves

The gearbox usually has to come out of the car for internal work. Once removed at Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn it is opened and inspected for worn synchromesh, damaged gear teeth, worn bearings and bent selector forks.

Where wear is confined to parts that can be replaced, those are fitted along with seals and fresh oil. Where there is widespread damage, a replacement unit may be more sensible, and that is a separate option we can talk through.

What decides repair or replacement

Condition of the casing and shafts decides it. Worn synchro rings are repairable, but damaged shafts or a cracked case push the balance toward replacement. Availability of parts for the specific box is another factor.

Cost follows labour and parts. The time to remove and refit the gearbox varies a lot by vehicle, and that is often the largest part of the estimate. We explain the numbers once we have seen what is inside.

  • Extent of internal wear
  • Parts availability for your gearbox
  • Labour to remove and refit
  • Whether other drivetrain parts need attention

What to tell us

Describe the noise and when it happens: in which gear, under power or coasting, hot or cold. Mention any recent oil change or clutch work, since these help rule things in or out.

If the gearbox is leaking or noisy, check the oil level only if you know how; do not drive with a failing box far.

In short: Describe the noise, avoid driving a box that jumps out of gear, and let us inspect before deciding between repair and replacement.

Manual Gearbox Repairs: FAQs

Why is one gear crunching?

Usually the synchromesh for that gear is worn. Other causes include linkage or fluid problems, so we check before opening the box.

Is a whining gearbox about to fail?

Not always, but whining often points to bearing wear, which tends to progress. Have it checked soon.

Can a leak be fixed without removing the gearbox?

Sometimes, for external seals. Others need it removed. It depends on where the oil is escaping.

Is it the gearbox or something else?

Several parts mimic gearbox faults. We inspect and test to find the true source before recommending work.

Will you tell me if repair is not worth it?

Yes. If replacement makes more sense we will say so plainly.
