Automatic Gearbox Repairs in Tyne and Wear
Automatic gearboxes are complex, and symptoms can have simple or serious causes. Diagnosis comes before any promises.

An automatic gearbox changes gear for you, using hydraulics, electronics and, depending on the design, a torque converter, clutch packs or twin clutches. That complexity means the same symptom, such as a slipping gear, can come from very different faults.
At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we handle automatic gearbox repairs, supported by transmission diagnostics, gearbox servicing and gearbox replacement. This page explains the signs to watch for and how we approach the problem.
Signs of automatic gearbox trouble
Early symptoms are often subtle: a delayed engagement when you select drive, a flare in revs between gears, or shifts that feel harsh or hesitant. Left alone, these tend to get worse.
A gearbox warning light, limp-home mode that locks you in a single gear, or a burning smell are all reasons to stop and get it checked rather than carry on. Driving a failing gearbox can turn a modest repair into a major one.
- Slipping, with revs rising but the car not accelerating
- Delay or thump when selecting drive or reverse
- Jerky, harsh or hunting gear changes
- Whining, humming or grinding noises
- Fluid leaking, or dark, burnt-smelling fluid
- Warning light or limp mode
How we diagnose it
We start with the simple checks: fluid level and condition where the design allows, and a scan for stored fault codes. Many automatic problems are electronic or hydraulic faults, such as a failed sensor or solenoid, and not mechanical wear inside the gearbox.
A road test helps us see when and how the fault appears. Together with transmission diagnostics, this tells us whether the fix is a service, a smaller repair, a rebuild of internal parts or replacement of the whole unit.
What affects the outcome and the cost
Cost is driven by the type of gearbox, how deep the fault goes and how much labour is involved in removing it. A fluid and filter service, a solenoid replacement and an internal repair are very different in scale.
Fluid is often misunderstood. Some gearboxes are described as sealed for life, but fluid still degrades, and the right fluid and correct procedure matter a great deal. The wrong fluid can cause damage. Whether an internal repair is possible depends on what we find when the gearbox is inspected, and we will tell you plainly where repair stops making sense.
- Gearbox design, such as torque converter, dual clutch or other types
- Whether the fault is electronic, hydraulic or mechanical
- Condition of fluid and internal parts
- Repair against replacement
Repair, service or replace
If caught early, a service or a minor repair may be all that is needed. If internal parts are worn or damaged, we can discuss repair or gearbox replacement, and the sensible choice depends on the car and the findings.
We would rather explain your options clearly at the estimate than push the most expensive route. Ask what each choice involves and what the risks are.
In short: Automatic gearbox faults are better caught early. Have us diagnose the problem at Banks of the Tyne before it spreads, and we will explain every option.
Automatic Gearbox Repairs: FAQs
Can I carry on driving with a slipping automatic gearbox?
It is wiser not to. Slipping generates heat and wear that can turn a smaller fault into a bigger one. Have it checked as soon as you can.
Is it always a major repair?
No. Faulty sensors, solenoids, low or degraded fluid and software-related issues can all cause symptoms. Diagnosis tells us which it is.
Does an automatic gearbox need servicing?
Often yes, even where the maker calls the fluid lifetime fill. Check your handbook and ask us what suits your gearbox.
Can any fluid be used?
No. The correct specification matters, and the wrong fluid can cause damage. We use what suits your gearbox.
When is replacement better than repair?
When internal damage is extensive or repair would not be sensible for the car. We explain this after inspection.
