Oil and Filter Changes in Tyne and Wear

Fresh oil and a new filter are some of the most worthwhile protection your engine gets, provided the right oil goes in.

Engine oil lubricates, cools and cleans the moving parts inside your engine. Over time it breaks down and collects contamination, and the filter that catches debris eventually clogs. Neither can do their job forever.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we carry out oil and filter changes for drivers across Tyne and Wear. This page explains what the job involves, why the choice of oil matters, and how to tell when yours is due.

When an oil change is due

The right interval depends on the vehicle, how it is driven and the oil used. Your handbook or service schedule is the starting point, and manufacturers differ widely. Short trips, stop-start driving and heavy loads are harder on oil than steady motorway miles.

Do not wait for a warning to appear. A low oil pressure light means stop driving and get the car checked. That is not a reminder; it is an urgent fault.

  • The service schedule says it is due
  • Dark, gritty or thin-looking oil on the dipstick
  • Oil level dropping between changes
  • Engine sounding rougher or noisier
  • Mostly short journeys or stop-start use

What the job involves

The engine is warmed so the oil flows, then the old oil is drained and the sump plug is refitted with a fresh washer where one is used. The old filter is removed and a new one fitted, with its seal lightly lubricated. The engine is then refilled to the correct level with the correct oil.

We then run the engine, check for leaks around the filter and sump, and recheck the level. The oil level is important: too little causes damage, and too much can too.

What affects the outcome and the cost

The oil specification is the big variable. Modern engines, and particularly those with turbochargers or diesel particulate filters, can be sensitive to the grade and standard of oil. Using the wrong one can affect wear, fuel use and emission equipment. We use what the vehicle's manufacturer specifies, not simply whatever is on the shelf.

Capacity also matters, since some engines hold far more oil than others. If we spot anything while the car is raised, such as a leak, a damaged undertray or a worn component, we tell you, but nothing extra is done without your agreement.

What to expect and how to prepare

Tell us the make, model and year, and any oil you have had trouble with. If you top up between changes, let us know how often. A car that uses oil quickly is giving a signal that is worth investigating.

An oil change can be done on its own or as part of an interim or full service. If you are unsure which suits your car, ask us at the estimate. Where a service indicator needs resetting, mention it when you book.

In short: Use the right oil, change it on time and check the level between visits. Ask us if you are unsure what your car needs.

Oil and Filter Changes: FAQs

How do I check my oil level?

With the car on level ground and the engine off for a few minutes, pull the dipstick, wipe it, reinsert it fully and read the level against the marks. Some cars have no dipstick, so check your handbook.

Can I mix different oils?

In an emergency a small top-up is better than running low, but it is better to use the correct specification. Ask us what suits your engine.

Do I need a new filter every time?

It is normal practice to replace the filter with the oil, as a clogged old filter would contaminate the fresh oil.

Is an oil change the same as a service?

No. An oil and filter change covers those items only. A service includes a wider set of checks and replacements.

What does the oil warning light mean?

Treat it as urgent. Stop somewhere safe, switch off, and do not keep driving. Have the car checked before it is used again.
