Major Servicing in Tyne and Wear

A major service covers the parts that only need replacing every few years, on top of everything in a full service.

Some parts of a car do not wear on a yearly timetable. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, some cabin and fuel filters last for longer cycles, and certain engine parts have long replacement intervals. A major service is where those longer-cycle items are dealt with.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we use it as the catch-up and reset for cars that are further into their life or are due the bigger items on their schedule.

What a major service adds

Think of it as a full service plus the items that come round less often. Which ones depend on the car, but they commonly include brake fluid, spark plugs, additional filters and sometimes coolant or transmission-related checks, according to what the manufacturer or the vehicle's condition calls for.

Not every car needs every item at the same point. We go through the schedule for your vehicle and explain what is genuinely due, rather than fitting parts for the sake of it.

  • Everything in a full service
  • Longer-interval fluids where due
  • Spark plugs where due
  • Extra filters where due
  • Deeper inspection of wear items

Who needs one

Cars that have missed services, vehicles that have passed a milestone in age or mileage, and cars bought used with an unclear history are the usual candidates. It can also make sense before a long journey or ahead of keeping a car for several more years.

If you are unsure what has been done to the car before, say so. A good service history helps us avoid duplicating work.

What affects the scope and cost

The biggest variable is the car itself. Engine type, the number of plugs, the type of fluids and how much labour it takes to reach parts all change the job. Parts quality also varies, and we can talk through options where they exist.

Because major services can reveal worn components, we keep you informed as we go and agree any extra repairs separately from the service itself.

Do not over-service

A major service is not automatically the right answer for an older car. If a full service covers everything due, there is no sense paying for more. Likewise, a service will not fix a fault. If something is wrong, it needs diagnosis, and we will say so.

In short: A major service deals with the longer-cycle items a full service skips. We will tell you what is truly due, and no more.

Major Servicing: FAQs

How is a major service different from a full service?

A major service includes everything in a full service plus items that fall due less often, such as certain fluids and plugs. Which extras apply depends on your car and its schedule.

How do I know if I need one?

Check the handbook or service book for what is due at your mileage or age. If you are unsure, ask us and we will work it out with you.

Does a major service make the car last longer?

Looking after fluids and wear items helps a car stay reliable, but no service can reverse existing wear. It is about keeping on top of maintenance.

Will you tell me before fitting extra parts?

Yes. We explain what is due and what we find, and agree anything beyond the estimate with you first.

Can I split the work over two visits?

Often, yes, particularly if parts need ordering. Ask us when you book and we will see what suits.
