Vehicle Valuations in Tyne and Wear

A valuation is an informed opinion on what a car is worth today. Understanding what feeds into it helps you judge whether an offer is fair.

Most people checking what their car is worth start online, type in a registration and get a figure. That is a useful starting point, but it is built on averages, and no car is average. A proper valuation looks at the actual vehicle in front of us.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we offer vehicle valuations as part of buying cars from customers. This page explains the factors involved so you can understand any figure you are given, ours included.

What goes into a valuation

Valuers look at what the car is, what condition it is in and how easy it would be to resell. The same model can be worth noticeably different amounts depending on the details, which is why two apparently identical cars rarely get identical offers.

  • Make, model, age and specification
  • Mileage compared with what is normal for its age
  • Service history and documentation
  • Number of previous keepers
  • Bodywork, paint, wheels and interior condition
  • Tyres and visible mechanical condition
  • Demand for that type of car at the moment

Why online figures and real offers differ

Online tools cannot see your car. They cannot spot a dent on a rear quarter, worn tyres or a missing service stamp, and they cannot tell if the car has been looked after. They also use general market data, which moves.

A hands-on assessment is more reliable because it accounts for the actual condition and for the work the car would need before it could be resold.

Condition, faults and honesty

Faults, warning lights, accident damage and a lapsed MOT all affect value, and we take them into account. They are not necessarily a reason not to sell. We buy vehicles in various conditions, and a clear description of the problems makes the process quicker.

If you have recent work done, such as new tyres or a service, bring the receipts. Proof carries more weight than a verbal claim.

Making the most of a valuation

Clean the car and bring the paperwork, as presentation and evidence of care do influence how a car is judged. Do not pay for cosmetic work expecting to recover the cost in full, as that is not always the case.

Ask for the reasoning behind a figure. A straightforward valuer will explain it, and you can use the explanation to decide whether to sell, part exchange or hold on to the car.

In short: A good valuation looks at your actual car, not an average, and the person giving it should be able to explain it. Tell us about your car and we will talk you through ours.

Vehicle Valuations: FAQs

Is a valuation the same as an offer?

Not always. A valuation is an assessment of worth, and an offer is what we are prepared to pay. We explain how the two relate when we look at your car.

Will my valuation change if the car has faults?

Yes, faults and repairs needed usually reduce value because they have to be dealt with before resale. Being upfront about them helps us give you a figure that holds up.

Can I get a valuation without selling?

Ask us. If you are just finding out what your car is worth, say so when you get in touch.

Does mileage always matter most?

It matters, but it is only one factor. A lower mileage car with no history can be worth less to a buyer than a higher mileage one with a full record.

Is a valuation the same as an insurance value?

No. They are different things with different purposes. Speak to your insurer about the value they use, and check the current rules if it matters for a claim.
