Windscreen Repairs in Tyne and Wear

A small windscreen chip can often be repaired, but position, size and type of damage decide whether it should be.

Stones thrown up on fast roads do the damage in seconds, and a small chip left alone can spread into a crack. Early attention often means a repair rather than a new windscreen.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we inspect windscreen damage and advise whether it can be repaired or the screen should be replaced. We decide that after looking at it, not before.

Check the damage quickly

Look at where the damage is and what it looks like, then get it checked rather than waiting.

  • A chip or star mark that has not spread
  • Cracks running from a chip
  • Damage in the driver's direct line of sight
  • Damage near the edge of the glass
  • Dirt or moisture in the chip

How a repair is carried out

The damaged area is cleaned and dried. Special resin is injected into the chip under pressure, filling the void, and it is cured to bond with the glass. The surface is then finished off.

The aim is to restore strength and stop the damage spreading, and to improve clarity. A faint mark can remain.

What decides repair or replacement

Size, type and position matter. Damage in the driver's main view, close to the edge, or with long cracks is more likely to need a new screen. The age of the damage matters too, since dirt in the chip stops resin bonding.

Advanced driver-assist cameras behind the glass can affect how replacement is handled, and we explain that if it applies. Cost depends on the damage and vehicle.

What to do now and what to avoid

Cover a fresh chip with clear tape to keep out dirt and water. Avoid slamming doors and blasting the area with hot air or boiling water, which can crack the glass.

Check the current rules on windscreen damage and the MOT. If damage blocks your view, do not drive until it is sorted.

In short: The sooner a chip is looked at, the better the options. Bring the car in and we will tell you whether repair or replacement makes sense.

Windscreen Repairs: FAQs

Can any chip be repaired?

No. It depends on size, position and type. We assess it in person and tell you plainly.

Will the chip vanish?

Usually it becomes much less visible, but a mark can remain. The main purpose is stopping it spreading.

Is a crack repairable?

Short cracks sometimes, long ones rarely. Ask us to take a look.

How soon should I act?

As soon as you can, since dirt and moisture make repair harder and cold weather can spread cracks.

Is it safe to drive with a chip?

A small chip outside your view is usually manageable short term, but have it checked soon. If it blocks your vision, stop driving.
