Side and Rear Glass Replacement in Tyne and Wear

Side and rear windows shatter into small pieces, so the job is as much about cleaning up as about fitting new glass.

Unlike a windscreen, side and rear glass is toughened. When it breaks, it breaks completely, leaving small fragments in the door, seats and boot. A break-in, a stone, or a failed regulator can all do it.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we replace side and rear glass as part of our vehicle glass service. Here is what the work involves and how you can limit the damage while waiting.

Immediate steps after a break

Safety and weather protection come first.

  • Take care with glass fragments on seats and floor
  • Cover the opening with plastic and strong tape
  • Park off the road where you can
  • Remove valuables and take photos if there is a claim
  • Do not drive with a missing rear window if your view is compromised

What the job involves

The door trim or boot lining is removed so the glass in the door or tailgate can be cleared properly. Tiny pieces often fall inside the door and must come out to avoid rattles and damage to the window mechanism.

The new glass is fitted in the frame or bonded, depending on the vehicle, then seals, trim and any heating element connections are checked.

What affects the work

Availability and specification of the glass matter: tinted, privacy, acoustic or heated glass varies by model. A rear screen with heating lines needs the wiring reconnected carefully.

A faulty window motor or regulator may need attention too. We explain costs at the estimate.

After fitting

Expect a few stray crumbs of glass for a while despite thorough vacuuming. Follow any advice about avoiding car washes or slamming doors straight after fitting.

If a break-in caused the damage, check the lock and door for damage as well.

If the cause was a break-in, take a look at the door lock, handle and interior trim for other damage. It is easier to mention it at the start than for us to find it halfway through the job.

In short: Side and rear glass is a clean-up job as much as a fitting job. Tell us what happened and we will advise what the car needs.

Side and Rear Glass Replacement: FAQs

Can side glass be repaired?

Toughened glass cannot be repaired like a windscreen chip. It is replaced.

Why does glass keep appearing?

Fragments lodge in door cavities and seat folds. We clear what we can, but small pieces can surface later.

Will the new window match?

We fit glass to suit your model, including tints where specified. Tell us about any extras on your car.

My rear window demister does not work. Why?

The heating lines or connections may have been damaged. We check this during the job.

Can I drive away in a damaged window temporarily?

Cover it and take care. If visibility is reduced or the glass could fall out, do not drive.
