Tyres & Wheel Alignment

New Tyres and Tyre Fitting in Tyne and Wear

Your tyres are the only part of the car touching the road, so choosing and fitting them properly is worth a few minutes of thought.

Tyres wear, harden with age and get damaged by kerbs, potholes and nails. When they reach the end of their life, grip in the wet drops off first, and that is when the car is most at risk.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we supply and fit new tyres for drivers across Tyne and Wear. The aim is a tyre that suits your car and how you use it, not simply whatever is on the shelf.

When it is time for new tyres

Check your tread regularly, and check the current legal minimum tread depth, as it is easy to run past it without noticing. Many drivers choose to replace tyres before they reach that limit because wet grip falls away as the tread wears down.

Cracks in the sidewall, bulges, cuts, uneven wear and tyres that are simply old are all reasons to have them looked at. A tyre with a bulge or deep damage should not be driven on, so get it replaced before using the car further.

  • Tread close to or below the legal limit
  • Bulges, cuts or cracks in the sidewall
  • Uneven wear across the tread
  • Repeated pressure loss or vibration
  • Tyres that are old, even if the tread looks fine

Choosing the right tyre

The sidewall carries the size, load index and speed rating, and your tyres should meet what the vehicle maker specifies. Beyond that, there are choices: budget, mid-range and premium makes, summer, all-season and winter types, and options tuned for fuel economy, noise or grip.

Tell us how you drive. Motorway miles, short school runs, towing and carrying loads all point to different tyres. Fitting matching tyres across an axle is the norm, and we will explain if your car needs anything particular.

What fitting includes and what affects the cost

Fitting means removing the wheel, taking off the old tyre, mounting and inflating the new one, and refitting the wheel with correct tightening. New valves, balancing and disposal of the old tyre are usually part of the conversation, and we explain what is included at the estimate.

Cost depends on tyre size, brand, type and how many are needed, plus any extras such as sensors on cars with tyre pressure monitoring, or seized locking wheel nuts. Ask us what is included before you decide.

What to do after fitting

Check your pressures against the figures in your handbook or on the door pillar sticker, and keep checking them. Correct pressure helps wear, grip and safety more than most people expect.

New tyres can feel slightly different at first, and a short gentle period is sensible. If the car pulls, vibrates or the steering feels off, tell us. Balancing, tracking and alignment can be looked at if needed.

In short: Good tyres are cheap compared with what they protect. Tell us how you drive, and we will help you choose and fit the right ones.

New Tyres and Tyre Fitting: FAQs

Do I have to replace all four tyres at once?

Not necessarily. Tyres are normally replaced in pairs on the same axle, and some cars, such as four-wheel drive models, may have specific requirements. We advise at the estimate.

Are premium tyres worth it?

It depends on the car and your driving. Premium tyres often offer better wet grip and lower noise, but a good mid-range tyre can suit many drivers. Ask us to explain the differences.

How do I know what size I need?

The size is printed on the sidewall of your current tyres and in the vehicle handbook. We can confirm it, and check that any change from the original is suitable.

Why do tyres need balancing?

An unbalanced wheel can cause vibration at speed and uneven wear. Balancing the wheel after fitting helps it run smoothly.

Should I replace tyres because of age?

Rubber hardens over time even if tread looks fine. If your tyres are old or the sidewalls look cracked, ask us to inspect them.
