Paintwork & Resprays

Full Resprays in Tyne and Wear

A full respray is mostly about preparation. The quality of the finish depends on what happens before any colour goes on.

A full respray means repainting the whole vehicle, not just the damaged parts. People choose it for faded or peeling paint, widespread damage, after a restoration or repair programme, or because they want a different colour. It is a larger job than a repair, and it rewards honest planning.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we offer full resprays within our paintwork work for drivers in Tyne and Wear. This page explains what a respray involves, the decisions you will need to make and what to ask before committing.

Is a full respray the right job

A respray makes sense when paint across the car has failed, with lacquer peeling, widespread fading or rough, patchy repairs. It also suits a car that has had several panels repaired or replaced and no longer looks uniform.

If only one or two panels are affected, a partial respray may achieve the same result with less work. We tell you honestly which route suits, since the right answer is not always the biggest job.

What the job involves

Preparation takes most of the effort. The existing paint is assessed, damaged areas repaired, dents and rust dealt with, and the surface sanded and primed. Trim, handles, lights and other fittings are removed or masked, so paint reaches edges properly rather than stopping at a visible line.

Colour and lacquer are then applied in layers, and the finish is checked and refined. If the car has rust or poor previous repairs, they must be dealt with first, as paint will not hide them for long.

Original colour or a change

Repainting in your car's original colour is usually simpler, as the colour can be matched, and door shuts and engine bay areas need less attention. Changing colour is possible but involves painting door shuts, under the bonnet and boot edges to look convincing, which adds work.

A colour change may also need to be recorded with the DVLA. Check the current rules or ask us, rather than relying on this page. Think too about how the colour looks in daylight, not just on a sample card.

What affects the outcome and what to ask

The condition of the existing bodywork, the colour and finish type, the amount of disassembly and the level of detail you want all affect cost and time. Metallic and pearl finishes take more skill to apply evenly.

Before agreeing, ask what preparation is included, whether door shuts and under-bonnet areas are painted, what repairs are separate and how the colour will be checked against your car. Ask for the estimate in writing and agree what happens if hidden rust is found. We cannot promise a result until we have inspected the car.

In short: A respray is only as good as the preparation behind it. Ask what is included, deal with rust first and agree the colour in daylight.

Full Resprays: FAQs

How long does a full respray take?

It depends on the condition of the car and the work needed, so we do not give a blanket answer. We explain the expected timescale at the estimate after inspecting the car.

Can you respray over rust?

Rust has to be removed and repaired first. Painting over it only hides it briefly before it comes through again.

Will it match if I keep the same colour?

The original colour can be matched, though ageing paint means careful blending is needed. We discuss how we will check the match with you.

Do I need to tell anyone if I change colour?

A colour change may need to be reported for the vehicle record. Check the current rules or ask your insurer, and ask us if unsure.

Is a full respray better than a partial one?

Only when the paint across the car needs it. If the damage is limited to a few panels, a partial respray may be more sensible. We advise after seeing the car.
