Steering Repairs in Tyne and Wear

Play in the wheel, a car that will not hold a straight line or a knock when turning means the steering needs looking at promptly.

Steering is the link between your hands and the road, so any looseness or odd noise is worth taking seriously. The system includes the steering wheel and column, the rack, track rods and track rod ends, and the joints that connect them to the wheels.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we diagnose steering faults for drivers across Tyne and Wear, working through the mechanical linkage so you know exactly what is worn and why.

When to stop and get it checked

Excessive free play, sudden stiffness or the wheel not returning to centre are safety concerns. If steering feels loose, heavy or unpredictable, do not keep driving the car. Arrange an inspection instead.

Milder warning signs include:

  • Vague or loose feel around the straight-ahead position
  • Knocking or clicking when turning or going over bumps
  • Steering wheel off-centre while driving straight
  • Car drifting or needing constant correction
  • Uneven or rapid tyre wear on the front

What we inspect and repair

With the front end raised we check the track rod ends and inner joints for movement, the rack for play and leaks, and the rubber gaiters for splits that let in dirt and moisture. Column joints and mountings are checked too.

Common repairs include replacing track rod ends or inner track rods, renewing a worn steering rack or its mountings, and putting right damaged gaiters before the joint inside is ruined.

What affects the outcome and cost

The main factors are which component is worn, whether the part is available on its own, and the access your model gives. Seized joints can add time. A worn rack is a bigger job than a track rod end.

Anything that changes steering geometry needs the wheel alignment setting afterwards. We explain whether that applies when we give the estimate.

What to expect

Tell us when the symptom appears: turning at low speed, at motorway speeds, or over bumps. If you have clipped a kerb or hit a deep pothole, mention it, as that can bend steering parts.

Ask what is worn, what is likely to wear next, and whether the repair affects tyre wear or alignment.

In short: Steering faults are about control, so do not postpone them. Describe the symptoms, get a mechanical inspection and fix what is genuinely worn.

Steering Repairs: FAQs

Is a loose steering wheel dangerous?

It can be. Play in the steering reduces control, so get it inspected promptly and avoid unnecessary driving until it has been.

What is a track rod end?

It is a ball joint connecting the steering rack to the wheel hub. When it wears, it causes play, knocking and uneven tyre wear.

Why is my steering wheel crooked?

It might be an alignment issue, bent steering parts after an impact, or worn components. An inspection separates these.

Is steering repair the same as power steering repair?

No. Power steering assistance is covered on a separate page. This page is about the mechanical linkage.

Will I need an alignment afterwards?

Often yes, after parts that affect geometry are replaced. We confirm at the estimate.
