Brake Repairs in Tyne and Wear

When the pedal feels wrong or the car pulls under braking, the fault is often in the hydraulics or calipers rather than the pads.

Brake repairs cover the faults that sit around the pads and discs: seized or sticking calipers, leaking brake pipes and flexible hoses, a failing master cylinder, contaminated fluid and handbrake mechanism problems. These can show up as a pedal that feels strange, a car that drifts to one side when you brake, or a burning smell after a short drive.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we inspect the whole braking system before suggesting anything, so you are not simply told to replace parts on a hunch. We cover Tyne and Wear, and we explain what we find in plain language.

Signs the braking system needs attention

Brakes are the most safety-critical system on the car, so symptoms deserve to be taken seriously. If the pedal sinks to the floor, braking is very weak, or the brake warning light stays on, stop driving and get the car checked before it goes any further.

Other signs are less dramatic but still matter.

  • Car pulling to one side when braking
  • Pedal that feels spongy, hard or slow to return
  • Burning smell or one wheel running much hotter than the others
  • Fluid loss from the reservoir or damp patches near a wheel
  • Handbrake that no longer holds or will not release

What the job involves

We start with a visual inspection of pipes, hoses, calipers and the fluid, then test how each wheel is behaving. A caliper that does not release properly, for example, will often wear pads and discs unevenly, so the cause matters as much as the symptom.

Repairs might mean freeing or replacing a caliper, renewing a corroded pipe or perished hose, replacing a master cylinder, or flushing old fluid and bleeding the system so no air is left in the lines.

What affects the outcome and the cost

Cost depends on which component has failed, how many corners of the car are affected, and whether related parts have been damaged in the meantime. A sticking caliper that has overheated a disc, for instance, can turn one repair into several.

Parts access also plays a part: some brake lines are easy to reach, others run along the underside of the car and may be heavily corroded. We explain the options and the likely scope at the estimate, before anything is done.

Preparing and what to ask

Tell us exactly what you noticed and when: only on cold starts, only at speed, only when turning. That detail speeds up the diagnosis. If the car is not safe to drive, say so when you book and ask us how to get it to us safely.

Questions worth asking: which part has failed, why it failed, whether anything else is likely to follow, and what the repair does and does not cover.

In short: Brake faults are rarely worth gambling on. Get a clear diagnosis, understand why the part failed, and fix the cause rather than just the symptom.

Brake Repairs: FAQs

Is it safe to keep driving with a brake problem?

If the pedal is soft, braking is weak or the car pulls hard, no. Stop driving and have it checked. Even a minor-seeming leak can get worse without warning.

How is this different from fitting pads and discs?

Pads and discs are wear items. Brake repairs deal with the parts that move, clamp or carry fluid, such as calipers, pipes, hoses and the master cylinder.

Why does brake fluid need changing?

Fluid absorbs moisture over time, which can corrode components from the inside and affect how the system behaves under heavy use. Your handbook gives the interval for your car.

Can you repair a corroded brake pipe?

It depends on where the corrosion is and how far it has spread. We inspect it and tell you whether a section can be replaced or whether more is needed.

Will you tell me before extra work is done?

Yes. We explain what we find and what it involves at the estimate, and you decide what goes ahead.
