Diamond-Cut Wheel Repairs in Tyne and Wear
Diamond-cut wheels have a machined, mirror-like face that needs a different approach from ordinary painted alloys.

A diamond-cut wheel has its outer face lathe-machined to leave fine, bright lines, then it is lacquered and usually combined with painted areas, often in grey or black. That bare metal look is what makes the wheel attractive, and it is also what makes it awkward to repair.
At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn our coachworks team can look at a damaged diamond-cut wheel and tell you honestly whether the finish can be restored on the wheel as it is, or whether the damage goes deeper than a cosmetic repair can reach.
Signs a diamond-cut wheel needs attention
The machined face is the first part to suffer. Lacquer chips or lifts, then moisture gets under it and the bare aluminium starts to corrode.
- White or grey bloom spreading under the lacquer
- Dull patches where the bright finish has gone cloudy
- Kerb scuffs that cut through to bare metal
- Flaking lacquer around the rim edge
- Fine lines or scratches that catch the light
How the repair works
The wheel is taken off the car, cleaned and stripped of the damaged lacquer on the face. Corrosion and any kerb marks are dealt with, then the face is re-machined on a lathe to take off a thin layer of metal and bring back the clean cut lines.
Fresh lacquer then seals the bare metal, and any painted sections of the wheel are refinished to match. The wheel is refitted and balanced.
What limits the result
Re-cutting removes metal, so there is only so much material available. Deep gouges, cracks or a wheel that has been re-cut before may not be suitable, and we will say so after inspection rather than promise a finish we cannot deliver.
Cost depends on how many wheels, how far corrosion has spread, whether the painted sections need work too, and whether any damage needs separate attention first. We explain this at the estimate.
What to expect and when to stop
If a wheel is cracked or bent, appearance is not the main issue and it should be checked before anyone drives on it. A cosmetic repair does not fix structural damage.
Once restored, keep the lacquer intact: wash off brake dust and road salt regularly and avoid harsh wheel cleaners that attack the coating.
In short: Diamond-cut finishes can often be brought back if the metal is sound and the damage has not gone too deep. Bring the car in and we will tell you straight what is possible.
Diamond-Cut Wheel Repairs: FAQs
Can any diamond-cut wheel be repaired?
Not always. It depends on how deep the damage is and how much metal is left to machine. We assess the wheel in person and tell you what is realistic.
Will it look like the day it was new?
The aim is a clean, bright machined face, but the result depends on the condition of the wheel. We will explain what to expect at the estimate.
Why not just paint the face?
Paint will not give the machined look. If you prefer a plain painted wheel, that is a separate option we can talk through.
Do I need all four wheels done?
Not necessarily, but a single refinished wheel can look different beside tired ones. We can talk through what suits your car.
Is peeling lacquer just cosmetic?
At first, yes. Left alone, water reaches the metal and corrosion spreads under the coating, so earlier attention usually means a simpler job.
