Air-Con Servicing in Tyne and Wear

A service is the preventative option: look over the system, check it is working as it should, and spot trouble early.

Car air conditioning is a sealed system that can lose performance slowly. Many drivers do not notice until the first properly warm day, when it is no longer cold enough.

A service is about keeping on top of that, rather than waiting for a failure. It is a different job from diagnosing a fault, which we deal with on its own page.

Why servicing is worth considering

Air-con systems rely on a refrigerant circuit, a compressor, a condenser at the front of the car and an evaporator behind the dash. Small leaks, worn drive belts or a blocked condenser reduce performance gradually. A check can reveal these before they become a larger repair.

  • The air is cool but not as cold as it used to be
  • The system takes longer to cool the cabin
  • A musty smell appears when it is switched on
  • The compressor sounds noisier than before
  • You have not had the system looked at for some time

What a service usually involves

Exact content varies, so ask what is included at the estimate. In general it covers a visual inspection of components, belts and connections, a check of how well the system actually cools, and a look at the condenser for dirt and damage. Where fitted, we also look at the cabin filter, as a clogged one reduces airflow and can add to odours.

At Banks of the Tyne in Hebburn we will tell you what we find and what, if anything, we recommend next. If the system needs more refrigerant, that is a re-gas, which we cover separately.

What affects the outcome

Age and condition of the system make the biggest difference. A system that has been used regularly is usually in better shape than one left unused, because the compressor seals and lubrication benefit from regular running. Leaks are the main thing a service cannot cure, since they need locating and repairing.

The type of refrigerant and system fitted to your car also affects what is involved.

Getting the most from it

Run the air con regularly, even in cooler months, to keep seals lubricated. Keep the front of the car clear of debris, and mention any smells, noises or slow cooling when you book the service.

A service is a check-up, not a promise that nothing will fail. If we find a problem we explain the options before any extra work goes ahead.

In short: Servicing keeps a working air-con system working. If yours is slowly getting weaker, a check now can save a bigger repair later.

Air-Con Servicing: FAQs

How often should I service my air con?

There is no single rule that suits every car. Your handbook and the car's age and use are the guide, and we can advise based on what we see. Do not wait for it to stop working.

Is a service the same as a re-gas?

No. A service is an inspection and performance check. A re-gas replaces lost refrigerant. If a leak is the reason the gas is low, the leak needs attention too.

Will servicing fix a smell?

It can help if the cause is something like a dirty filter. A persistent smell from inside the system may need further work, and we would explain this after looking.

My air con works fine. Do I still need a service?

Not urgently, but performance declines gradually and you may not notice. A check can pick up early signs while the work involved is still small.

Can you service any make of car?

We work on a wide range of vehicles, but system types differ. Tell us the make, model and year when you book and we will confirm.
